Brazil nuts originally come from Brazil. Brazil nut trees are nowadays found mainly in the tropical jungle of northern Bolivia. The Brazil nut owes its name to the port city of Pará on the Amazon, from where it was already being exported to Europe in the 17th century. Brazil nuts have a high fat content, but since these are unsaturated fatty acids, they are healthy when enjoyed in moderation. Another special feature of the Brazil nut is its high selenium content, which in turn strengthens the immune system and detoxifies the body. In Germany, Brazil nuts are especially popular around Christmas time and are also hard to imagine leaving out of the classic nut mix "trail mix".
