The papaya originally comes from South America. Nowadays it is grown in many tropical and subtropical countries. In 2019, India led producing countries with a 44% share of the harvest. The name "papaya" comes from the language of the Arawak people and was already called the "fruit of the angels" by Christopher Columbus.
